EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
