British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages leading to the site... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
