This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in January, after the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc begins.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the news, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of creation, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
